Photography with Kevin Dutton – Plants and Nature in Aragon

Spend special time photographing plants and nature at Mas de la Serra, a luxurious converted farmhouse, and improve your images exploring the surrounding almond groves and nearby Matarraña hills. Learn new technical skills, study composition and natural light and develop your creativity with tutor Kevin Dutton and a small group of other photography enthusiasts in a beautiful Spanish mountain setting.

Taking inspiration from the beauty of this wilderness retreat’s romantic setting, students will explore nature compositions, plant portraits and close-up photography. The course is suitable for users of all types of camera, helping to improve knowledge and photographic techniques. During the course, there will be outings to local gardens, walks in the grounds among the almond groves and among the nearby hills. You’ll have opportunities to shoot all manner of natural subjects: the local landscape, close-up plant studies, ancient olives and other trees, local plants and flowers, fungi and lichen, still life plant compositions with natural light and more.

Throughout the course, tutor Kevin will share his knowledge of natural photography on a group and individual basis, helping all students to develop their ability and produce better pictures. Practical assignments and group discussions of nature photography and your own images will help to improve your critical skills and share creative ideas.

The aims of the course are :

• Learn and improve skills in all aspects photography
• Gain a greater understanding of how to frame subjects in nature
• Make the most of available light
• Enjoy discussion with fellow photography enthusiasts
• As it is primarily a practical course, most of the time will be spent photographing in the local environment, working on technical and aesthetic aspects of photography:
• Landscape and natural detail composition
• Colour temperature and balance
• Nature studies and close-up work
• Depth of field and focus
• Using a tripod
• Shutter speed and sharpness
• There will be ample time for discussion and this flexible course will, to a degree, be tailored to students’ individual interests.

A certain amount of walking is involved on this course carrying your camera equipment, so please come prepared for this. Local walk lengths can be tailored to students’ requirements.

About the tutor:

Kevin has over 20 years of experience as a professional photographer and tutor. He has worked for the RHS, the BBC and the Sunday Times. An RHS Gold medal winner for botanical photography, he also teaches at the V&A in London and West Dean College in West Sussex.
